Arriving at the Fern Grotto on the island of Kauai was the highlight and final destination of our trip down the Wailua River. We took the Smith Boat tour. The Wailua River is the only navigable fresh water river on any of the Hawaiian islands. Kauai is called the “garden island”, and certainly lives up to it’s name.
As we floated down the river, enjoying the flowers and greenery, and mountain peaks in the distance, we were given hula lessons. Well, we tried!
When we came to the destination dock, we first took a walk through the rainforest. In the rainforest, flowers that are grown as houseplants in most of the US, were 5 to 10 feet tall, instead of a miniscule 1 foot tall.
At the Fern Grotto, we were given a nice amount of time for viewing and picture taking. Then we were treated to Hawaiian musicians, and a hula dancer.
Although there were a lot of groups coming and going from the grotto, it was nice that they had it timed so the group was small enough at one time to be able to enjoy it.
Seeing the mosses, the ferns growing upside down, and the fresh dripping waterfall, was a treat for the senses. Weddings are often held there. You can see why.
